"In the South, at about the same time, a group of transatlantic investors, including in their distinguished ranks the films actors Elizabeth Taylor and her husband Richard Burton had made their plans. They intended to extend the old fishing port of Los Cristianos in the direction of Playa San Juan by building a kind of Tenerife Palm Springs – an ‘up-market’ resort which would be called La Playa de las Américas – in honour of the would-be investors, who were from North America. Remembering how Nice in the South of France took off as a successful resort when her airport was opened, the investors built a small runway near the very Fifties seaside town of El Médano, plus one or two buildings, the first sign of a prospective second airport for Tenerife. The new airport would be prepared for crowds of American visitors, eager to leave Chicago, Philadelphia and New York for Tenerife instead of Miami Beach. All systems were go. But something went wrong: probably the American investors had little or too little knowledge of the ambiguities and complexities of Island bureaucracy. The idea collapsed..."
